R.I.P. Wiggly

Spring is supposed to be all about beginnings and rebirth, but we suffered a death in the family over Easter weekend. Wiggly the worm, who was dug up on Saturday morning, smothered in a bucket of mud, and watered regularly for the next 12 hours, passed away Sunday morning among loved ones. May he rest in peace.

His adopted family is pictured here, in front of the small grave adorned with a stick headstone. Wiggly’s grave was later exhumed and reburied in the flower bed, out of the way of foot traffic…so he can truly rest in peace.

Who are we kidding? There’s no resting or peace with three kids and two dogs running around the backyard. Maybe we should have flushed the poor guy down the toilet.

Rookie Move

In celebration of April Fool’s Day, I’m thinking of my darling hubby, recalling some recent moments and wondering…Is he a really good sport or a really big sucker??

I present to the jury Exhibit A…a photo taken after the kids asked him to “close his eyes” because they had a “funny surprise” for him. He dutifully obliged.

And Exhibit B…When just the other night at dinner he told the big kids, “Ok, I will give you dessert if you promise to be cooperative and quick in the shower.”

They saluted him and replied, “We promise!”

An hour later, when the kids were neither clean nor cooperative, Hubby grew agitated. He stifled a growl and I overheard them explain where he went wrong.

“You know Dad,” Doodlebug said. “You didn’t really do it right. You’re supposed to give us the dessert AFTER we do what you want, not before.”

“Yeah,” said Rascal, “because otherwise we might trick you and not really listen.”

Oh, so that’s how it works! Who knew??

I’m all for teaching responsibility and empowerment, but I swear I’m gonna lose it if I hear this retort one more time:

“Mama, YOU are not in charge of me…I am in charge of myself! I learned that at school, so it’s true!”

It’s bizarro world over here…Tonight was leftover/kids-choice night, which usually means pizza or pancakes. But here’s what the big kids picked:


Doodlebug dined on pork ribs, raspberries, grapes, a chunk of sourdough bread and a glass of soy milk.


Rascal requested kale chips, grapes, lemon yogurt and a glass of skim cow milk.

I think I was the only one disappointed…I was really counting on some Aunt Jemima love.

I love that after 7 years of parenting I can still be amazed by the tiniest of milestones. Smiley is pointing at everything these days and twisting his mouth every which way to create new sounds. All day I watch his little mind piece together new puzzles and at least once a day I think, “Wow! Who in the world taught you that while I was running around mothering?”

At the track

My favorite Sunday morning escape is to the nearby middle school track, where my multi-tasking skills can shine…here I am playing fetch with Winston while kicking the soccer ball, shooting photos and drinking coffee. A few minutes later I will add lightsaber fighting to the list. On any given Sunday, we are joined by other multi-taskers as well. There’s the Dad walking the track while alternately tossing balls to his dog and his lacrosse-stick-wielding son. There’s always at least one mom running laps while her kids pedal around on their trikes and bikes. And the most relaxed ones there: the older power-walking couples, who make grand gestures with their hands as they walk, talk and laugh through their laps.

Yesterday Doodlebug and I experienced an American Girl store for the first time. The shopping and dining with dolls was tons of girly fun, but my favorite part, hands down, was the bathroom break. Germaphobes, check this out!
