See that young bride up there? The one smiling so big it looks like she has a coat hanger in her mouth? She was crazy-happy that day! And confident and optimistic and absolutely bubbling. She and her love were setting out to build a dream together.

Today, I hardly recognize her.

This is not because I lack joy or confidence or optimism in our marriage, but because I’m 13 years wiser and living a completely different life.

That girl in the photo, she has no idea what marriage requires. She thinks she does. She thinks she knows something about stick-to-it-ness. She has heard the rumors of the hard work of marriage and only half believes them.

But today, on the Lucky 13 Anniversary, the former bride reflects on all the leaps of faith, the laughter, the listening, the patience, the growth.

Today, she knows the rumors were true. And she knows that of all the reasons her marriage is strong, luck is not one of them.

  1. First of all, I feel like I should confess that on days that I don’t quite feel like working out, I’ll occasionally think about you and how flipping fit you are, and know that if I ever hope to look as good as you at the age I’m at now, I better move my butt. This photograph of you 13 years ago where you look EXACTLY the same only reinforces that. Secondly, it’s refreshing to see two people who totally get it. Yours is a partnership I envy and hope to find myself one day!

    Happy anniversary you crazy kids!

P.S. Rob’s hair is amazing in this photo.

    • No, thank YOU! This summer heat/humidity is sucking the life and motivation out of me…your sweet comments make me want to keep going. :)

Also, I can’t wait for him to read your hair comment. He did/does have great hair. It was very Bradley Cooper back then!

  2. Oh, what a wise and witty woman you are!

It IS all about the “leaps of faith, the laughter, the listening, the patience…” – the stick-to-it-ness!

And remembering that smile. Happy 13-26-39-52…

  3. WOW, what an inspiring essay. Cheers to two of the most wonderful people I know. I want to be just like you when I grow up! Really. I do!

  4. What a beautiful day and event. Two days of rain threatened the outdoor wedding in the mountains. One hour before the wedding the sun broke out of the clouds.
The only thing brighter was the smile on the brides face.

  5. I know I’m late here, but happy happy happy anniversary! You look beautiful and happy — much the same as I imagine you look today! And you’re 10 years of wisdom ahead of me … which is clearly yet another reason why I will keep reading your blog :)

    • Thank you! I was so sad I only got to wear that dress for one night. I remember swearing I would wear it again on my 40th birthday…but now that I’m 38 it doesn’t seem like such a cool idea. Ha!

  6. Just came over from ScaryMommy. Happy anniversary, wow 13 years is quite an accomplishment (especially when you have two labs, that’ll test your marriage!) Excited to check out the rest of your blog!
