Have you heard about the Listen to Your Mother show?

I’m so stinking excited and honored to be a part of this year’s Austin cast along with some very talented women. Please mark your calendars if you will be anywhere near Austin on April 30th. If you can’t make it (bummer for you) look for the show in one of the other four cities hosting this year, or watch online last year’s inaugural show from Madison, WI.

Also? A big thanks and shout-out to Wendi Aarons and Jennifer Sutton for producing the Austin show and for Ann Imig, founder and Chief Birth Mom of the entire LTYM concept.

Hope you can experience one of the many shows this year!

Robert Frost coined it. My kids embraced it.

Be still my heart.

I hit the track this morning with no particular plan except that I wanted to run where I could use my headphones without fear of being snuck upon. I expected nothing in return beyond the usual attagirl from my ego and the notion that maybe I had burned off the calories from last night’s wine.

I plugged in a soaring soundtrack—the same one I’ve been listening to nonstop since December—and I ran. I tuned out and gathered speed, rounding corner after corner until I realized I was doing my least-favorite and most-bemoaned workout. One lap, two lap, break. Repeat.

Again and again and again.

Then, something dislodged inside me and for the first time in several months, I felt strong. And powerful. And dare I say, indefatigable.

My gut and my heart have been sustaining me all these months, holding me upright and giving me much-needed endurance. My legs though, they have been weary and weakened by the simple task of putting one foot in front of the other.

Today, however, these legs propelled me. And when they did, my lungs, too often constricted and anxious, filled easily. The knot of emotions in my stomach loosened and my shoulders gave way, allowing the weight I’ve been carrying to fall behind and offer a tailwind instead.

Lap after lap I ran in the muggy darkness until there was nothing left. Nothing except the wisdom that even as a mess of tears and sweat, I am undeniably intact.

It’s been an odd week for us…we’ve had more dinners on the run than usual, which means we either forget to share our gratitude or we share it but don’t write it down. Either way, this makes for a short list. But it also reminds me how important this tradition has become to us as a family. We all miss it when we skip it. Next week: priorities, priorities! And more home-cooked meals.

Family, what are you thankful for today?

Forget the gentle garden clean-up…I am now on a spring cleaning bender and my battle cry is “Purge, Purge, Purge!!” The latest mission: the piles of kid artwork cluttering my office. I swear they multiply like germs. Where is the hand sanitizer when I need it?

Like many moms, I’m a tad nostalgic when it comes to these masterpieces. But I’m also realistic about our household equation: 5 people + 1 dog + 12 hobbies / 1700 square foot = zero room for superfluous crap.

So, I hold on to the more hilarious or adorable creations, then I store some, frame others, and have even made laminated placemats out of a few. (Whoa there with the craftiness, Liz.)

I’m truly grateful to the teachers who foster my kids’ creativity and manage to get the artwork in the cubbies intact. I like to think they have a vested interest in this process. After all, that’s what good teachers do…they inspire kids to use their brains in creative and productive ways, right?

Which is why I was puzzled when I found this piece that Smiley made.

Yes, that’s it. No, there’s nothing on the back.

Perhaps they were teaching the toddlers all about minimalism that week?
Who knows, but right now I’m making room on my wall for this gem.

P.S. I’m thrilled to be a guest writer over at The Mouthy Housewives, where I’m dishing out advice about those evangelical runner-spouses. Check it out!

Keep your eye on the prize.
